3 WAYS ALCOHOL AFFECTS MUSCLE GROWTH

Okay, so if you dont know, alcohol interferes with our ability to digest carbs and fats. But more importantly does it affect muscle growth? Unfortunately, yes

3 WAYS ALCOHOL AFFECTS MUSCLE GROWTH

  • It disrupts protein synthesis

  • Alcohol inhibits signals to build proteins

  • Alcohol reduces insulin resistance - which is a stimulator of muscle growth

#1 ALCOHOL INTERFERES WITH PROTEIN SYNTHESIS

Muscle tissue is constantly being built and demolished. When we exercise, various signaling pathways are activated, causing amino acids to be released from our muscles to aid in the formation of new ones. We need to consume protein in order to BUILD muscle. Protein synthesis is the process of constructing new muscle. When alcohol is consumed, it inhibits or disrupts specific signaling pathways that instruct the body to build muscle.

#2 IT PREVENTS SIGNALS FOR PROTEIN BUILDING

Furthermore, because alcohol inhibits signals to build proteins, it is hypothesized that this allows for the activation of molecules responsible for muscle wasting. Despite the disruption of signaling pathways, studies have shown that total amino acid content is not reduced.

#3 ALCOHOL INCREASES INSULIN RESISTANCE.

In addition, alcohol causes insulin resistance. Insulin is a powerful stimulator of muscle growth and is responsible for carbohydrate absorption into muscles. Muscle growth and recovery are hampered by a lack of absorption ability.

Final Words

While a jack and coke may calm your nerves enough to help you strike up a conversation with the girl across the bar, keep in mind that what you're drinking contains no nutrients.

Yes, alcohol has a caloric value of seven calories per gram, but these are empty calories. They're about as useful as a chocolate teapot.

At the end of the day, all alcohol does is make you fat.
